Enterprise Portal Software, also known as an Enterprise Information Portal (EIP) or corporate portal, is a framework for integrating information, people and processes across organizational boundaries. It provides a secure unified access point, often in the form of a web-based user interface, and is designed to aggregate and personalize information through application-specific portlets.

One hallmark of enterprise portals is the de-centralized content contribution and content management, which keeps the information always updated. Another distinguishing characteristic is that they cater to a broad audience (employees, customers, suppliers, etc.).

Enterprise Portal Software can include:

  • Data aggregation: The software can pull together data from various sources (internal and external), allowing users to view and interact with information from those various sources from a single interface.
  • Collaboration: Many enterprise portals provide features like collaboration tools, enabling users to interact, share information, create content, and work together on projects.
  • Personalization: Enterprise portals often allow for personalization, enabling users to customize the information they view based on their role, job function, personal preferences, etc.
  • Search: Enterprise portals usually include robust search engines that enable users to find the data and content they’re looking for.
  • Integration: Enterprise portals can integrate with a variety of enterprise applications (e.g., ERP systems, CRM systems, etc.) to provide users with a single point of access to all the tools they need to do their jobs.

Examples of enterprise portal software include Microsoft SharePoint, IBM WebSphere Portal, Liferay Portal, SAP NetWeaver Portal, and Oracle WebCenter Suite. Each of these offers different features and capabilities, making them suitable for different types of organizations or applications.
