Evolution Data Optimized (EV-DO, EVDO, etc.) is a telecommunications standard for the wireless transmission of data through radio signals, typically for broadband Internet access. EV-DO is an evolution of the CDMA2000 (IS-2000) standard that supports high data rates and can be deployed alongside a wireless carrier’s voice services.

EV-DO service was provided in the 800 MHz to 1900 MHz frequency range, where mobile network operators had licenses. The theoretical maximum download speed for EV-DO is around 2.45 Mbit/s with EV-DO Rev 0 and 3.1 Mbit/s with EV-DO Rev A.

It’s important to note that actual speed depends on several factors including the signal strength, network congestion, and the user’s distance from the tower. The standard also supports “always-on” data connections. That is, users can remain connected to the network as long as they are within coverage.

Despite its advantages, EV-DO has been largely surpassed by more modern network technologies like 4G LTE and 5G, which offer higher speeds, lower latency, and more efficient use of the radio spectrum. Most carriers are phasing out their 3G networks, including EV-DO, as they build out their 4G and 5G networks.
