High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) is a mobile telecommunications protocol that belongs to the HSPA family (High-Speed Packet Access), which enhances 3G networks. It is sometimes referred to as 3.5G or “3G+” due to its significant improvements over basic 3G technologies.

As the name implies, HSDPA is designed to improve the downlink speed, which is the speed at which data is transferred from the network to the user. This is especially important for activities that involve downloading large amounts of data, like streaming video, downloading files, or browsing the internet.

When first introduced, HSDPA provided download speeds of up to 14.4 Mbps, a significant improvement over 3G. Over time, enhancements to the HSDPA protocol have seen potential speeds increase even further.

An important thing to note is that HSDPA is a data-only protocol, meaning it doesn’t directly improve voice calls. However, faster data speeds can facilitate higher-quality Voice over IP (VoIP) services, like those used by Skype or WhatsApp.

The complementary technology for uplink (data transfer from the user to the network) is called HSUPA (High-Speed Uplink Packet Access). Together, HSDPA and HSUPA make up the HSPA service, which is commonly used by mobile networks around the world as of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021.
