An intranet is a private network accessible only to an organization’s staff. Generally, a wide range of information and services from the organization’s internal IT systems are available on an intranet, and those can be accessed using a web browser just like websites on the internet. However, unlike the internet, which is a public and globally accessible network, an intranet is secure and accessible only within the organization.

Intranets are used by organizations to share information, collaborate on projects, automate business processes, and communicate updates among employees in a centralized manner. They often include a variety of features, such as bulletin boards, databases, and local email systems, and can also offer access to corporate resources like company policies, training materials, HR resources, and more.

Since intranets are insulated from the rest of the internet, they offer enhanced security, making them ideal for internal communication and the storage of sensitive data. However, it’s still necessary to employ strong security measures, including firewalls, secure servers, and appropriate access control mechanisms to keep intranet content safe.

In recent years, intranets have evolved to incorporate elements of social networking and collaboration platforms, often being referred to as “social intranets” or “digital workplaces”, thereby providing more interactive and engaging communication environments for employees.
