Sony Hits New Milestone: Over 40 Million PlayStation 5 Consoles Sold Worldwide
In a recent announcement, Sony has achieved a new milestone in the gaming console market, surpassing the 40 million mark in global sales of the PlayStation 5. The company took to Twitter to express its gratitude, stating, “Thanks to all of you, we have sold over 40 million PS5 units since its launch in November 2020.”

Unlike the previous milestone celebrated in July 2021, where Sony proudly declared the PS5 as the “fastest-selling console in Sony Interactive Entertainment’s history,” this time, they refrained from such claims. Nevertheless, the sales of the PlayStation 5 have continued to be impressive, even with improvements in supply chain challenges faced during the pandemic.
Jim Ryan, the President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, expressed his appreciation to the community for their patience while dealing with these issues. He added, “The PS5 inventory is now in good shape, and we are finally meeting the pent-up demand.”
The surge in supply has been noticeable in 2023, with Sony tripling the number of PS5 units shipped from January to March, reaching 6.3 million units compared to the 2 million units shipped during the same period the previous year.
Despite competition from other gaming consoles, PlayStation 5 remains a dominant force in the gaming industry, solidifying its position as a favorite among gaming enthusiasts worldwide.
