What is a Domain Name?
A domain name is a unique, user-friendly identifier for a website or online resource, making it easier for people to access and navigate the internet. In essence, a domain name serves as the address for a particular website, which users can enter into their web browser to visit that site. Domain names are essential for locating and identifying websites and other resources on the internet, as they provide a memorable and easily understandable alternative to numeric IP addresses.
Behind the scenes, domain names are linked to IP addresses, which are a series of numbers that computers use to identify each other on the internet. Since it’s challenging for humans to remember long strings of numbers, the Domain Name System (DNS) was developed to translate these numeric IP addresses into easily recognizable domain names. This conversion allows users to find websites and resources without having to memorize their corresponding IP addresses.
A domain name typically consists of two or more parts, separated by dots. The part to the right of the dot, such as .com, .org, or .gov, is called the top-level domain (TLD). TLDs represent the highest level of domain classification and are used to categorize websites based on their purpose or geographical location. The part to the left of the dot, often referred to as the second-level domain, is the unique identifier chosen by the website owner, like ‘example’ in example.com.
Domain names are registered through domain registrars, which are organizations accredited by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) or other national domain authorities. When registering a domain name, the owner must select a unique second-level domain that hasn’t been claimed by someone else within the chosen TLD. Once registered, the domain name must be periodically renewed to maintain ownership and keep the website accessible to users.
